STAY: Lone Mountain Ranch, MT

About the Ranch
Tucked into the forests of Big Sky Country, Lone Mountain Ranch is where rustic heritage meets understated luxury. But it’s more than just a pretty face.
For more than a century, Lone Mountain Ranch has stood as a true icon of the American West. From the early days of Yellowstone’s founding to the rise of Big Sky and the evolution of ranching and logging in the Northern Rockies, the ranch has been at the heart of it all.
Today, it remains a proud steward of Montana’s wild legacy, preserving a spectacular wilderness for the next generation of adventurers.
Lodging Options
Choose from intimate one-bedroom hideaways to spacious family lodges. Expect crackling fireplaces, hand-hewn wood details, cozy porches, and sweeping mountain views.
Thoughtfully restored and modernized, these cabins blend the soul of the frontier with the comforts of today — the perfect backdrop for unplugging, recharging, and soaking in the best of the West.
Dining Options
Dining here is more than a meal — it’s a true Montana experience. Horn & Cantle serves up locally sourced dishes that tell the story of the land, best enjoyed fireside after a day spent exploring.
During summer, guests can catch a weekly rodeo while indulging in elevated street food, or dig into a western-style Sunday BBQ packed with grilled classics, fresh sides, line dancing, and s’mores under the stars.
Winter brings the legendary Sleigh Ride Dinner, a starlit journey to a historic cabin for a prime rib feast cooked over a century-old stove — moonshine shots and cowboy serenades included.
Other Amenities
Balance rugged adventure with pure relaxation. After days spent horseback riding, skiing, or hiking Big Sky’s vast wilderness, unwind with yoga classes or a full lineup of massages — from head to toe.
Sip cocktails fireside at the bar and lounge, while kids dive into their own adventures at the on-site club.
Outdoor fireplaces and scenic picnic areas invite you to slow down and soak in the Montana landscape, one wild, perfect moment at a time.
Activities: Find Skills You Didn’t Know You Had
3-D Archery
Put your sights to the test on our 3-D archery course. The Lone Mountain Ranch archery course features life-size, high-density foam targets depicting the wildlife you’ll find roaming Montana. Spend time with a professional guide on the practice course to sight in your fully adjustable compound bow before you “hit the woods.” This is an experience like no other in Montana — guaranteed to create lifelong memories and unbeatable photo ops. You might even discover a new passion and hobby, just like many guests before you.
Ropes Challenge Course
Our on-site Challenge Course offers a fun family adventure or a personal test of grit. With our own programming and a “challenge by choice” approach, guests start with a safety orientation before climbing 30 feet into the air, belayed by a professional guide, to tackle the course elements or race a family member or friend to the top of our Jacob’s Ladder. Prefer to stay closer to the ground? Test your balance and teamwork on the low-element cable course — the goal: make it from start to finish without your feet touching the ground.
Axe Throwing
Few things are more satisfying than sinking an axe into the bullseye. This activity is built for family-friendly competition. A Lone Mountain Ranch guide leads each group through a safety and skills orientation before the axes start flying toward our wooden slab targets.
Canoeing/Paddleboarding
Choose from two unforgettable paddling experiences during your stay at Lone Mountain Ranch. Take a short half-day trip to Lake Levinsky in Big Sky, or venture farther on a full-day journey to Hebgen Lake in West Yellowstone. On either trip, you’ll spend a relaxing day under Montana’s endless skies, paddling pristine waters. Lone Mountain Ranch provides canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and all necessary safety gear for a fun, easygoing adventure. For the Hebgen Lake trip, a gourmet shoreline lunch — packed and prepared by the Horn & Cantle kitchen — is included.
Other Activities
Adventure runs deep at Lone Mountain Ranch. Saddle up for a classic horseback ride, catch the action at a true Montana ranch rodeo, or explore untamed trails on a guided hike. Dive into world-class fly fishing, find your center with yoga under the big sky, venture farther on an unforgettable tour of Yellowstone National Park, or just relax and enjoy the show. Here, every day is a choose-your-own-adventure kind of day.
